I have a "Neweer RF-550D" ring light (GN 49.21'/15m) that uses LEDs. I've used it for more than a year. I recently got a, "Vivitar VIV-DF-586" ring light (GN 59.06'/18m). Holy shit, the Vivitar light is ultra bright. It is so bright that I'm having trouble using it at f/8 so I'll need to fix that soon. It works perfectly for f/16 but I need that clarity that f/8 gives. It makes me think that the Neweer light has its GN rating faked or something. The Vivitar light doesn't use LEDs and that's a huge difference too. The Neweer light is good for continuous lighting at least. The Vivitar sounds like a Gauss rifle charging up and firing with an ultra high pitch whine that never goes away even when it is ready to fire. Which is kind of annoying and loud.
I guess that's the difference between a $30 LED light and a $65 light. The difference between them is like 10 whole stops of light for macro/super macro. I can't wait to get things settled with its use and get some good shots. I'll probably build an adjustable arm for off camera use and some diffusers for it.
