Alright, I've been out so I haven't had a chance to reply directly to all this so I'm gonna summarize/respond to a bunch of stuff here.
>Your photos are boring.
Fair enough, I don't think they're all gems but I think I get some interesting stuff. It's also true that I shoot within a small subgenre of photography so if you're not interested in this style of portraiture, guess what? This is going to be boring. Like I said in my OP though, I have no delusions about the depth of my photography, and I'm planning on really putting some effort into at the very least doing more narrative-centric editorials, but hopefully extend beyond that. If you think that I should go and shoot photojournalistic portraits of war veterans or something, it's not gonna happen.
As a side note, to everyone saying that what I shoot is super generic and everyone is shooting similar things, I'm not even going to argue, but please, I invite you to post some specific photographers who are doing similar work. I like to check them out.
>Your photos are vapid.
Yeah, they're shallow. I'm well aware. I love exploitation cinema and pulp. Arguments about subtext of many of those films aside, I'm not trying to make deep work. I'm not trying to make art. I'm working from a pure aesthetic place, and I'm trying to make work that I like, and I enjoy. I'm also not ignorant of the connotations of things like red lights, the subjects I shoot/how I shoot them. They are conscious decisions. Would I change some aspects of some of my shoots after more meditation and discussion? Yes, as would I'm pretty sure anyone you asked who cares about what they do.
