Cut a hole in a piece of paper the size of 35mm film and hold it at arm's length. That's your view of your normal lens on 35mm.
Now cut a hole the size of whatever medium format film you want. You're keeping the distortion that you had before (no glass, duh), but increasing your field of view.

In the example pic, you absolutely could get a wider lens to get to the edges of this scene, but it will look like you used a wider lens.
