As far as shooting, most thieves are chicken shit and won't confront you so keep your gear close or on you, don't leave camera bags behind you or against a wall out of eyesight while you shoot.
Be confident and dress to the environment if you look scared or like a tourist, you will look like a target.
If you are that afraid of losing your shit, get a throw away camera, old pentax- minolta film bodies can often be had for $10-20 at thrift stores or early digital rebels can be found under $50 all with lenses.
That way if someone thinks he needs it more than you, give it to him and really you are only out a roll of film or memory card.
Don't carry a weapon unless you CAN and WILL use it and for the love of god don't pull it unless you ARE GOING TO USE IT. It WILL NOT intimidate anyone desperate enough to rob you.
That being said a mono pod is essentially a big fucking club.
