OP here
I bought a Sigma 18-50mm and spent the whole day taking pictures of cosplayers.
I set aperture to f2.8, touched the cosplayers' face on the touchscreen before taking a photo, and let the camera handle everything else. I needed different focal lengths for each photo because sometimes the cosplayer was close, sometimes they were far, sometimes other photographers got in my way, so I think I'm going to stick with the 18-50mm instead of getting (more) primes.
I saw some people with pretty big camera setups so I'm pretty happy with my setup's physical size.
Quality wise I am fairly content. I don't know what constitutes a good photo but the A6600 photos are much better than my smartphone (S21 Ultra) which was the whole point.
I'm not going to post full shots or even faces, but this photo was taken at 34mm focal length and I think the quality is superb.
Full frame autist - I appreciate your advice but I don't think I'm going to make the swap over to full frame (just yet). I really enjoyed taking photos today so I'm going to continue getting my feet wet. I travel a decent amount and some of the setups I saw today would simply be too much of a pain in the ass to lug around long distances. If I enjoy photography enough over the next few months I'll do more research and maybe upgrade next year or something.
