I'm not sure if OP had their camera in auto-area AF. The picture I've attached was in auto-area, and it picked up on the Nikon logo as the subject. It's also taken in P mode.
>1/100th is double what you needThat's my point, you shouldn't have camera shake at that speed with any 50mm equivalent lens. Getting motion blur means you really were shaking about.
>why did the camera choose this?Program mode follows the user's custom settings for auto-ISO control. Perhaps they had theirs set to something like a minimum shutter speed of 1/100th and max ISO at 6400.
P mode also allows you to override its choices and weight the calculation for faster shutter speeds or wider depth of field. Maybe they dialed it in to give a little faster shutter speed because it was shot hand-held.
