Shortcomings:
300mm even on crop requires you to get close to anything but the bigger birds.
At 300mm, f/6.3 it is dark. I shoot BIFs at 1/2000s, and that pretty much requires full sun. Anything else was exercise in sensor noise generation from my 7D. For mammals and stationary birds you can obviously go way lower, and image stabilisation is quite decent.
