If you drop a plastic AF SLRs its most likely fucked and in my experience the batteries last weeks to months and issues are typically fatal, and there's definitely more room for them to crop up.
People like the "fashion accessories" because they are no longer being made and have a longer potential lifespan. That's it. The vast majority of camera repairs are not even repairs, just sloppy cleanouts with a solvent. Most of us who want "advanced" already have newer digital cameras that aren't so old they're very close to the average failure point.
