Perhaps photography is best viewed printed on the wall or in a book, where the artist has control over the colours and resolution, free of compression artefacts, and most importantly of all, free of engagement-driving distractions?
It's only when I go to an exhibition or sit down with a book I really give each photo the time and attention it deserves, instead of absent-mindedly swiping to the next. So it seems only natural that attention-seeking bullshit like thottery, over-cooked images and cheap gimmicks float to the top, while more thoughtful images sink to the bottom.
But how can we make the printed medium more accessible to more photographers and a greater variety of them, not just art establishment insiders?
