First thing I always do is correct the color temperature, then work highlights and shadows. Since deer mostly show up just as the sun is setting, I'm beginning to work the shot to reflect that time of day instead of trying to make the picture look like high noon.
I've been playing with masks, using the software to detect the subject. That way, I can keep the background dark and focus on just the deer.
