my go to settings are centre-weighted metering (should probably use evaluative more often though) and having the meter at half a stop up
I've never had any issues with the AF on mine, you should notice that it feels much quicker overall than the D3100, full speed burst is a bit over 6 fps iirc
dynamic range obviously isn't the best in difficult conditions, but I feel it's enough for what I use it for
