The S cameras have more barrel distortion on the wide end in raw format - almost a fisheye effect. The G series have more useful (longer and larger aperture) telephoto. You can almost-kinda take a portrait with background blur on the G series.
As for aperture control, that's true, but it depends on what shooting mode you choose. Experiment with program mode on these cameras and you may find that they are smart enough to open the aperture when you would prefer. Not that it matters too much with the tiny sensors.
