it shoudl work with the g lens. my n80 with a 35 1.8g dx lens focus is blazing fast. rarely ever hunts for focus.
as for the focus problem, I'd guess the second smaller mirror under the main mirror is either extremely dirty or, most likely, missing. the AF mirror falling off was a common issue on the N55. you can try gently lifting the mirror and taking a look at the AF mirror or AF sensor on the bottom panel to see if there's any grime in there, or if the mirror is missing. if everything seems fine, then the AF module might be dead.
