I think I might finally realized what makes film look so different from digital. Film looks more like a painting. I don't know how to express it since I don't have technical knowledge but it looks to me like with film there are less shades of a color. For example in this photo it looks almost like her clothes are in the same shade of red. With digital you would see a much bigger range of shades. It's the same with painting where a painter obviously won't be able to add as many shades as in real life. However if you look at some recent hyperrealist paintings they tend to look like digital photographs.
