Clear = not exposed to any light
Opening the back totally exposed the film. Best advice is to load the film and cock the advance and fire the shutter once or twice to make sure the film is caught in the take up spool and moving. Then close the back and don't open it again until you finish the toll and have rewound it back into the canister.
We all make dumb mistakes anon so no worries. I've been shooting film for a very long time and just this winter I popped the back of my camera open briefly in a moment of absent-mindedness.
