ok guys update, i was doing the scanning slightly wrong. same crappy results though. this is scanning at the highest oversampling settings, 12800 ppi @ 48 bpp. Followed by a reduction to posted resolution and 8bpp in Gimp. To me it looks like the scanner is not even close to resolving the detail in the negatives. There are no edges here that aren't a mess.
