you can draw in the depth in black / white and set it as a mask for a layer and use the mask as a source for lens blur and then you can either set up close, far away, or anything in between by clicking on the image in the blur preview and control the blur shape and everything, it's super cool
most of my depth mask needs are solved by laying down a gradient on the ground, masking out prominent objects and refining the mask, and setting those objects to the colour they're on top of on the ground gradient
