It's funny cause I'm taking the exact opposite road with HP5+. Instead of pushing with dilute high acutance developer, I'm pulling with dilute (1+3) very fine grain developer (Perceptol).
I think it works great at managing contrast, especially in harsh light, and the grain stays small. Also edge effects in around very dark objects, if there are any.
Tried to find a shot similar to yours, for comparison.
