The price they gave is simply what they were prepared to pay for it. If it's low it doesn't make them sleazy bastards, it's just an indication of how badly they wanted it ie. not much.
The anguish you describe in having to sell it yourself is exactly what you're paying to avoid when you take their low offer. People with real jobs whose time is worth real money would actually consider that good value not to have low-socio classifieds-scourers blowing up their phone and coming to their house all weekend.
