What you're doing (not filling the frame with subject) is a very common mistake with photographers who don't have experience shooting portraits and here are the two most common causes. Either you lack the confidence to shoot tight, or you're just using center focus and being lazy about your crop.
Pro Tip: Don't be scared to shoot tighter, it's perfectly okay to crop the top of a head, crop an arm, crop a hand, etc, despite what many autistic plebs will say on /p/
