You only have to lit a scene to bring the DR of the scene closer to the cameras DR and some scenes cant be lit at all.
Lighting a set is only a workaround for technological limitations or a creative choice. If you dont need to lit a set so much you have much more creative freedom, an easier time working and enable actors to feel more immersed. You will need a very good sensor for this though which brings us back to professional cameras.
