I went from a D50 to a D5600 and honestly it didn't feel like an upgrade. Shot on a D610, D810 and loved them and just bought the bullet, sold a couple of guns and got a D850.
Honestly I spent too much and a D610 would have been more than enough but I wanted dat MB-D18.
You should be able to find used D6xx and D7xx bodies for relatively cheap
