on macOS you have to watch out that you download and install the canon driver and not the apple air print driver because while the air print driver prints fine text and shit all your photos will have a greenish hue and the colors will be all wrong. you have to use the proprietary secret sauce canon driver.
because inside it canon does a lot of shit that's unique to the printer model and only canon knows it.
there's a possible workaround for you though: you could try running canon's professional layout and printing software in wine. it communicates directly with the printer - bypassing any driver - and does what the canon driver would otherwise do. as this software is self contained you could run it under wine and maybe get proper results.
or just run a windows VM for printing.
or be a perma virgined incel and try to write an open source implementation of canon's driver for linux lol
