Photography is quite unique in that it is accessible to everyone, there is no real learning curve like there is with painting or playing a musical instrument. You press the button and if the button was pressed by chance in front of a "thing" that resonates with humanity at that time you are a famous photographer.
The recent Peter Lik debacle and the granny who took a snap of the young royals on her phone is a perfect example. A person who owns and can operate a camera is a photographer. Would you buy a set of crayons and call yourself an Artist? Oh wait, then there's deviantart kek.
