The viewfinder on the D3400 isn't too bad, though I'd like it to stick out more. Smashing my face all over the back of the camera isn't fun. The LCD is worthless outside most of the time too. Not only that but using the LCD for shooting is really terrible since it is oddly framed. I use the viewfinder and rapid fire lots of shots as the subject moves in and out of focus. It makes for more deleted photos, but I found that when I'm taking pics of insects I have to do that.
My only gripe is that depth of focus is so tiny when doing macro. I was taking pics of a Cicada Killer wasp's face and only the tiniest fraction of its face was actually in focus at any time. But, that can't be helped.
