Hand holding at longer reaches means you can do max zoom without a monopod, that can easily be the difference of catching a moment or missing it.
And it's lighter, if you ever held 600mm, you'd know it's heavy. You can be a hulk, but kilos will still show. Holding it is fatiguing and carnying is just as much. Someone with a lighter system will move further, be quieter, and be able to work for longer. Again giving you opportunities that are impossible with larger, heavier gear.
