For field sports you really want the background separation of a 2.8 lens and I've heard the 200-400 gets pretty soft at closer range, and for motorsports (my main area of experience with it) and action sports you want the extra reach and TC compatibility of a 500/4.
I think this shot was 200-400+1.4x, we'll see what the EXIF says. (The original files are on an old computer so I had to download it from my own flickr.)
