It's because Sony had mis-marketed the Back-side sensor technology.
They pioneered this technology on a small sensor first because it was hard to manufacture, but due to this, nobody was really impressed by it and didn't put much significance into it because the small sensors didn't impress people.
But then came a new Spanish inquisition and made Backside Sensors with Full Frame, and nobody really expected another Spanish inquisition.
