Generally expensive Zeiss/Voigtländer/Leica glass is gonna be better than a cheap Pentax/Canon/Nikon prime, but an expensive Pentax/Canon/Nikon prime might be better, depending on the lens.
And all of that's really besides the point, since those boomers are right: The character of the lens is gonna be far more important than the MTF chart, unless all you want to do is pure document/art reproduction and shooting test charts. No lens from a reputable brand made this century is *bad*, some just shoot a slightly more detailed test chart than others, and a lens that gives you a nicer looking picture but with a less impressive MTF chart is gonna be a better lens if you want to take real pictures.
