That's the key point. I can get better results out of an APS-C camera than my cell phone, even when I'm doing what the cell phone would normally do (pic related). The dedicated camera will also have better ergonomics, and I get much more control over the final result than the cell phone will give me. Regardless of focal length, I think the dedicated camera will always beat the cell phone if you're trying to do something besides take baby photos. Even then, I'd still take my baby photos with the dedicated camera because I just like using it more.
