As far as the lens goes, it is not exactly the perfect tool for the job, but i'd run the 35mm for most of the day. Since you don't have the convenience of an adjustable focal length on that, you're going to have to stay mobile.
If you have the social skills to take charge and be commanding while being fun and not an asshole, a combination of posed shots and candid shots are generally the best results. Fly on the wall style will probably lead to some disappointing results.
