Your dog was raised to be dependent on you, he's not free, he would normally run around going hunting or do some other dog stuff instead of going for a walk with you.
People who need dogs as a tool like hunting are understandable, but most people raise dogs to be their companion. This is animal cruelty. These dogs can't survive without humans anymore. It's like cutting a birds wings to keep them on the ground.
Every dog owner has a mental illness and is human garbage. They think their dogs love them but these dogs are suffering from the stockholm-syndrome, they are literally hostages kept on a leash.
