I work in night clubs so I had my fair share of harassment, but that's boring. 90% of it is drunk people getting all angry for no reason, never happened much to me except a couple of punches from a drunk guy that thought my lens bag was a punching bag.
But outside of night clubs, oh boy. That really rustles my jimmies. In clubs I get it - you want your privacy, I'm never obnoxious but reasoning with drunk people is hard, so that's fine.
Outside, outside it's full of sacks of shit that think that just because they have a uniform it means they're fucking Patton or something.
I've had a ton of encounters, none are funny and they're all like this: I'm taking pics in a public area or in a parking lot next to a private building and some guy comes over, acts like "I'm the boss" and tells me to go away because "this is private property, can't take pictures here".
The two best ones:
- I was taking a sunset picture of Rome's Gazometro, an old structure used to distribute liquid gas to Rome's light network. It's visible from kilometers away, but I was taking this picture on the road close to a gate. This guy comes out and tells me I can't take pictures of the Gazometro because "it's private land". To put this into perspective, it's about the size of the Colosseum, you can really see it from kilometers away. This guy was so full of shit I made fun of him for a while asking if he would come and stop me if I took the same picture from across the road, he said "yes" so I just laughed and fucked off.
- While setting up for some portraits in the right corner of pic related (the covered area), an obviously retarded (not as an insult, he truly had difficulties speaking words) security guard comes and tells us to fuck off, super rude and angry, because this is a private area. I just fucked off because there was no sense in arguing, but what you see in the picture is the service parking lot and safety exits of Rome's old convention center and there are no private property markings.
