I used to paint/draw a lot when I was younger, but apparently, I have start doing it again. A good advice I'm going to keep in mind.
Recently, I started wondering if following compositional rules in photography leads to results that truly reflect the own view of the photographer. Strictly applying these "rules" would mean that in same situations the shots would turn out the same, but would these be equally good because of that, or would applying the rules dilute the personal view?
I also checked a lot of photo books and noticed that shots by e.g. Koudelka, or Winogrand do rarely seem to strictly follow compositional rules. People around here are oftentimes about the significance/interestingness of a shot and the consensus seems to be that a single photo has to speak for itself. To me, there are several factors that have to come together to make a good shot, but composition is one of the less important factors, while also series of shots can (but don't have to) communicate a lot more than a single frame.
