It's more of a forwards compatibility than backwards.
But even then, Z sort of breaks it partially due to not having motor-drives in the adaptor mount that a whole cluster of the lenses need.
The RF protocol is still basically the EF protocol with some extra bells and whistles for things like combined Lens/Body stabilisation and control rings.
