Same mistakes we all made when first trying light trails and night stuff- primarily underexposure and focusing on the gimmick rather than the photo
General rule of thumb I use is that if I wouldn't shoot it in the daytime there's probably no reason to shoot it at night
Also shoot at twilight and get a fucking tripod. The former lets you get all the detail in the sky and foreground if you want it and if not you just wait a half hour. You can even double expose and mix and match
