Shooting at the hip is terrible. You never get over the fear of take pictures of people and it looks like a sneak shot with the angle being from below and pointing up. Unless you are using a 28mm full-frame equivalent and shoot at the hips/chest level at 2 meters (which looks okayish), otherwise don't bother. Just build up confidence, take pictures too far away then gradually get closer. So what if people see you, it is only for a fraction of a second if you are both walking.
