The sky either goes to white - or you loose detail to the shadow.
Where negative film can tolerate some fucking around, with slide the detail's just lost so you either have to have the right combination of filters, or accept that some things are going to go to black.
If all else fails, pick a day or scene where there's fuckall dynamic range and take a poke. Then work from there.
And for god's sake get them mounted. Then you're guaranteed to get them back so even if the scans are shite, you won't be dissapointed.
I wondered what all the hubbub was about until I got the physical images back. Compared to the shitty labscans, they're so much better.
