The problem with wide angles is that it emphasizes the foreground. And then when the real subject is the background, people start searching for some "visual interest" to use as a foreground, place it with the rule of thirds, and snap away without any regard to whether it adds or takes away to the image.
With a telephoto you have to be deliberate and choose what really matters.
