There's plenty of guides out there on how to scan 'properly' but the easiest one i've found personally is to scan the negative as-is and open it in photoshop, Create a new levels layer and go through the RGB channels (leaving the RGB channel alone until the end) moving the sliders to the edges of the 'peaks' in each of the channels.
Sometimes there's a peak on the left and side and a dip shortly after that. that part right there is the mask itself.
If you want to cheat a bit, select the black eyedrop tool and click on the mask for each layer and see how that goes.. you dont always get predicable results though.
