I doubt that every single camera manufacturer ever would use fake leather over real leather even on their most high-end cameras just to save a few pennies and not because the fake leather is actually better. Real leather requires continued care to keep it from cracking and falling apart. And the stuff they put on cameras is only mistakenly called leatherette, by the way. It's actually vulcanite rubber which (unlike leather) is grippy and durable and waterproof and doesn't soak up oil from your greasy fingers.
Pic related is a camera which is actually covered in real leather. It's made with real leather because durability was not a concern for a $50,000 fetish item which is never actually going to be taken out of its case and touched by ungloved fingers.
