Privatization was clearly a disaster for trains in Britain; the prices are extortionate. Amazing to think that London to Manchester only cost £3 in the early 80s, which isn't worth more than £11 today. Now? Just a one way ticket is £43 / £76 / £133 depending on dates and times! The Beeching cuts in the 60s didn't help either, but some of them have been revived as heritage railways like Swanage Railway. Even more pricey though.
