Yeah, it's mostly that large because of the 2.8 aperture, it requires a lot of glass. The 2.8 paired with the long lens helps separate the subject from the background, and for sports it allows for fast shutter speed. I have a 400mm 5.6 and it's still crazy for bokeh. Pic related is a canon 400mm 5.6 L (not a f2.8). It's one of my favorite lenses
