"Art" created for those purposes tends to not require the budgets that Crewdson's productions take. It's usually low effort stuff backed by circlejerks. Any normalfag can appreciate Crewdson's work without needing some mental gymnastics telling him it's good.
Crewdson's imagery deals with the oneiric. And a beautiful thing is that it's inspiring. He doesn't just get inspired by others, he inspires others. When David Lynch made the finale of Twin Peaks: The Return, I'm positive that he took inspiration for the last scene from this photograph.
