It's a tough call.
I prefer my stuff to look as subdued as possible, like it's something you're actually seeing. But it can be hard to recognize when something's overcooked if you've been looking at it or working on it for a while. I think the best thing to do is to do your initial edit, if you're not 100% on board with it, sit on it for a while and come back to it.
