Even a compact point and shoot will automatically adjust the setting to make sure the flash doesn't overexpose everything.
You can also do what the what the other anon said and bounce the flash off the ceiling or you could get a soft box/diffuser for your flash, with either of those ways you'll need to buy an SLR camera and a dedicated flash unit.
