>>3997554My best guess would be although the sky immediately around the sun is very bright (like 10 or 20 stops above the dark shadows) and very much in the shoulder the sun is just so bright that it can push past and register as even denser.
Like if you kept plotting the characteristic curve it would flatten out, but way over on the right is just very slightly more dense.
I could be wrong, and the reason is much more simple.
