In this pic I used a linear polarizer filter to darken the sky just enough to avoid overexposure. I'm probably oversimplifying things, but for me it seems that the filter reduced the scene contrast just enough to fit into the dynamic range of the sensor. Without the filter I might have had to take several pictures at different exposures and then combine them in post-processing. I find this a very good use case for the polarizing filter.
