Here's the laziest, easiest comparison I could find in ten seconds on Flickr. This was shot with a sony A99, which probably has about 14 stops if you shoot raw. It looks like he increased contrast for dramatic effect. There was probably tons of usable info in the shadows there.
You say nothing's blown out in yours, but the sun is an indeterminate blob due to all the haze (which would also decrease the dynamic range of the entire scene). It's much more clearly defined in this photo. I don't think you actually know what 17 stops would look like.
