It's pretty obvious it allowed me to get shots I couldn't get otherwise, but I don't know if the 2.8 non IS, being the same price, could have achieved the same result with the additional stop of light.
I was surprised by the audible sound it produces when functionning though, it sounds like a small electric scale model train is choochooing in there. Apparently it's normal.
